Proposal:Plagiarism Policy

I've been thinking on this for a while, and now I've decided to go ahead and write up another policy for discussion and the like.

Plagiarism is the intentional copying or theft of someone else's ideas or works of literature. This includes but is not limited to:

Directly copying and pasting stories from elsewhere and claiming them as yours.
Directly copying and pasting stories from this site and claiming them as yours.
Claiming a story that isn't yours as yours.
Blatant copyright violations.
Copying exact quotes from a story and changing very little.
Blatant, almost identical ripoffs of already existing stories.

As a literature site, we wish to promote the freedom of ideas that is vital for the growth and happiness of a community. Plagiarism defecates on this freedom by limiting the creativity of both the thief and the victim - in essence, it is the literary equivalent of murder, and will be treated as such.

If you believe someone has plagiarised, please contact an Administrator with details and evidence.

Penalty

Thus, depending upon the severity of the plagiarism, it is up to the administrator who is handling the case to decide the punishment, but the minimum block will be no less than 6 months, autoblock enabled. There is no maximum block - that being said, if said administrator chooses, when a story is plagiarised the offender may receive an indefinite block without violating the Blocking Policy.

Possibility of a Network-Wide Penalty

If the deciding admin is also an administrator on a sister site, the block may also extend to those wikis if the deciding administrator decides to do so. This rule will override the the guidelines set in the Blocking Policy. This block may only be appealed through a local bureaucrat on aforementioned wikis.

Seems good to me, although I'm not sure about the part of the Network-Wide penalty. I think that it should be taken in an individual wikia basis, instead of possibly going into the whole network.

Plagiarism will not be tolerated here. Period. If you need to pass off other peoples' works as your own, you do not need to join this community, because we do not need people like that here. Plagiarism only serves to make us all look bad and seem as though we condone it.

We seek to foster creativity and originality, but to pass off someone's work as your own is not only dishonest but illegal too. If this were college, you would be expelled. If this were a job, you would be fired and blacklisted. On here, you will be barred from editing.

It's not an action you can ACCIDENTALLY perform. Plagiarism is something you must willfully commit with intent to deceive.

Homages are fine, references to other works are too, but not straight theft.

It angers me greatly to know people I once had at least an ounce of respect for on this site had been submitting other peoples' works as their own. Why would you do this? Honestly. It's not a popularity contest. If you don't have the talent, you simply do not. It's why I don't do music or YouTube videos. My talents are better served writing. Despite not being the best ever at it, I don't feel the need to crib something better and submit it as though I am top dog. Actually putting forth the effort is how you grow your own style and how you get better at writing.

TL;DR: Plagiarize something, get banned, and get lost. We don't need people like that here and we certainly do not want them here either.

Pretty much this. Users on this wiki should know that plagiarism is a HUGE no-no. We can easily find plagiarize works on the wiki, so eventually the person will get caught and banned. I give pretty hefty bans when I find somebody stole stories from some site. I don't really think we need a policy since it should be common sense, but people are going to do it anyway, so your written policy is fine. It irks me that we have to have this in the rules.

I would just take what Cleric said and run with it (get it?). Seriously though, his comment summarizes the wiki's attitude towards plagiarism more than the proposed policy.

The difference is that his comment is a comment. The policy outlines what we do. It writes down the rule.
