Just like a whole host of other things, it can be great when done effectively/for a good reason. Gore gets a bad rep in relation to creepypasta, because it's often poorly written and has little to no purpose when considering a story's plot. Good gore is not only well-written (e.g. creative, avoids cliches, has the ability to make the reader actually squirm) but also has a reason for existing that isn't just to make the story scarier or more shocking.
I generally prefer the subtler pastas, but if it actually adds to a story, I don't mind gore. I've read a few where it's used to good effect. When it's just gore for the sake of gore, though, that's usually when I check out.
