Am I saying that all spinoffs are bad? No. Am I saying it's impossible to write a good spinoff? No. I'm saying that 99% of the time, they are terrible. I'd actually very much rather Banning put his Creator's Cut and the sequel to his JtK on the Spinoff Appeal page than be essentially unread on Spinpasta.
The wiki has become a lot more relaxed since 2014, and it's partially because the workload distribution between admins as it currently is happens to be low. That's not a bad thing. As it currently is, an administrator popping in every couple of hours or so is acceptable because they can get most of what needs done completed within a short time-frame. But then we unban spinoffs and remove the filter - suddenly, we will be pressed for active administrators who can spend most of their time on site lest it be overwhelmed with bad OC fanfiction. Because, you know, I feel majorly uncomfortable with the idea of "Oh, well, we'll just get Empy and the admins to do it!"
The last accepted spin-off, by definition, was 2014. I don't count the JtK thing since the literal point of that contest IIRC was rewriting it. If you want a spinoff posted on site, not only should you be putting the time and effort in to write it and write it well, you should be writing it well enough that it straight up competes or is even better than the original.
Once again, a story not being original detracts from its quality. These blanket bans are in place due to 1) Quality and 2) Originality. These are stories people want to copy over and over again because they're formulas that got popular - if it worked for one, it works for everyone else, right? Many times they will carry the same plot-holes as the original. That's assuming they aren't basically the exact same story.
I'll put it this way. You've got a website. A genre of stories continually get posted - 99% of them are bad. What do you do? Blanket ban them so that you can approve the ones that get in without overwhelming the site, or allow all 100% and hope and pray that you and your admin team can take it all even if you gotta make it an all-nighter? Do you filter out the bad ones or do you just hope that you can find the gem if you let them all in for the sake of 'traffic'?
This wiki has more traffic than a lot of other wikis on Wikia. We get somewhere around 50-100 edits and 5-10 editors and users per (average) day. This is a rough estimate by looking at the Recent Changes and Wiki Activity page. Many of the other wikis? Eh, around 10-20 edits, 30 on a good day. 40 if the wiki is just starting up. Maybe 1 or 2 new users, nothing too big. As far as traffic goes, we are by no means suffering.
