Never Forget

I had a best friend, ever since I was a kid. His name was Ethan, and he was two years younger than me. When he was 15, he started to get into programming, and after 5-6 years he started to sell his games on different websites. I am very proud of him. He even became a favorite on one of the sites. But unfortunately, he didn't enjoy his fame for a long time.

March 12, 2015. Ethan had a terrible accident, crashing right into a huge truck. The car caught fire, and he couldn't get out in time. It was a very difficult time for me, and I got depressed.

A month after the crash, when I was just starting to try to get rid of the stress and sleepless nights, I got a message. To my surprise, it was from Ethan. There was a link to some website, and I wrote the word "Friend Jackie" under the link.

When I clicked on the link, I went to the game site. I saw a game called Jacky's Adventures v. 1.0" I was surprised because Ethan always called me "Jacky". I thought it was either someone in his family or someone who knew about me and Ethan.

I downloaded the game and opened it on my computer. It sounded pretty primitive, the kind of music that could be in any adventure movie or game. I pressed the "play" button. The game was in the form of a strategy game, as the good old "Heroes of Might and Magic", but instead of raising a huge army and fighting for your castle, you had only 1 main character that you could upgrade and fight against other monsters and bosses. Ethan was a huge fan of HoMM3, that's why he probably made a similar game. I enjoyed the game, I haven't played something like this in a long time. But did I know, that it would almost destroy my psyche...

When I was battling a hydra, the game suddenly slowed down. I didn't understand what could have happened. The game itself is offline, and it wasn't laggy before. I decided to wait, I thought it would pass. But no, this time, the game just froze. I tried to somehow restart, but along with the screen froze my mouse. I was sure that this is just my computer because I bought it 8 years ago, but then, began to appear strange inscriptions.

I didn't expect that in any way. I didn't understand what had just happened. After thinking about it for a while, I assumed it was the usually hidden message Ethan had prepared. But then, everything changed drastically.

The same music that had been playing since the beginning of the game changed dramatically. It became more indecipherable. Then some arrows pointed to the "unexplored territory" (those who played Heroes of Might and Magic will understand).

When I got there, the screen changed dramatically. I was not even a little glad, because I opened new territory. and in the background sounded incomprehensible music, as if someone was quietly playing the drums and knocking on the door every 10 seconds. No monsters, no artifacts, nothing. Just dead desert. I searched a long time for something but found nothing. I was very disappointed, I expected at least to meet some strong and tough monster. I was about to leave the desert, but at one point I realized something was wrong. The place where I was entering the new zone was part of an endless desert. I tried to find a way out, but nothing changed. I got desperate and quit the game.

After some time, I decided to give it a try again, hoping that something would change. I swore to myself that I would never enter that zone, and started the game, but it was this attempt that was the decisive one for me.

It was the same as always. The same music, the same buttons... But there was one difference-Title screen. It changed to an image of some creature, and the letters became more pixelated. When I clicked play, the first and only thing I saw was my character. It was dark all around, and I could hear giggling in the background. The screen felt like it was broken, the image of my character was corrupted.

I thought the game broke because it was version 1.0. Everywhere I went, there was only darkness and my character. This made me frustrated because I was so hoping to get through my best friend's game and make him happy even after he died.

Suddenly, a model truck appeared right in front of me. As soon as I approached it, the screen changed to a video of a man riding the truck. I didn't like it at all, but for some reason, I kept watching. The screen started to glitch a little bit again.

Then, the text appeared.

WOULD IT STILL HAPPEN?

It was at that moment that I remembered everything. That day, before Ethan died, we had a huge fight. After a long conversation, he quietly walked out and drove home. That's when that horrible accident happened. But I was stubborn, yes, so stubborn that I didn't even go to his funeral. What an idiot I was. That's probably why Ethan's soul can't rest in peace.

After that memory, I realized who that driver on the screen was. I didn't want to look, but my body felt like it was pulling me toward the screen, and my eyes wouldn't stop looking. And then I saw the very scene where he crashed. And after that, that awful scene began to repeat itself over and over and over again. I couldn't stand that kind of mental pressure, I couldn't watch it. In the end, there was a picture with a text:

It's been years since that happened. I've come to terms with Ethan's death, but I still feel a lot of guilt toward him. I wounded his soul, and he couldn't leave in peace. I hope he forgives me, but in the meantime, I live in peace, and I hope it stays that way for a long time.
