  • So, it has been a long, long time since I have written something for this wiki.

Lately I have been thinking, "Wouldn't it be great if there was an easy way to save these stories for offline reading?". And I figured that I am not the only one that would like something like this.

So naturally I opened up Emacs and started hacking away at a solution to this little predicament and what I came up with is something that I think y'all will quite like.

To put it simply I have created a magic button that lets you save a pasta as a pretty formatted PDF file for offline reading.

Now, it's not quite ready for production just yet but it will be soon.

So, I want your feedback on this. Would you like to see a button that makes saving your favorite stories a breeze?

Leave your thoughts, comments, and concerns below.

    • Why do we need this?  There's mobile viewer for the on-the-go reading.  Also you are aware that you can highlight areas and select Print to... and choose PDF to skip having to insert code anywhere, right? This idea is silly and seeks to solve a problem that doesn't exist.

    • ...Or you could use Word, Google Docs, or http://pastebin.com/ to save your stories, just like everyone else.

    • Shh... PDFs are good for stupid people who visit the site to read with 0 comprehension of right click.

    • Why would we want stupid people posting stories on our site?

    • Other way around. You want stupid people to be able to download stories from the site.

    • Catering to stupid people isn't really high on my list of priorities.

Nor mine.  I doubt we need to cater to idiots who cannot figure out how to use a mouse.

    • Catering to stupid people is sort of what you do on a daily basis when you fix, reformat, and spell check stories. You also work to make the site look good an easy to navigate for stupid people.

If you wanted to reach you could also say that it would help people with disabilities access content easier on screen readers.

But all of that is entirely beside the point seeing as you don't actually have to do anything to support it.

The amazing thing about JS is that there are many ways in which one could use it.

The most common of which is via the site's JS (which is dropping a line into a file and being done with it). The second most common way is via bookmarlet which is something you drag into your bookmarks bar and click on when you need it.

Either of these two methods require either little to no work from the site administration or from the user.

You'd be hard pressed to consider either of those things a chore (especially when you have to do nothing for the latter).

    • Why would a retarded person want to read creepypastas?

Those things are all necessary to insuring the site runs smoothly. This is not.

    • To be fair, that's a question for Trollpasta users.

This doesn't hinder the site or you either. As I pointed out, you don't actually need to do anything in regards to it.

    • I'm not saying it's a hindrance, I'm just saying it seems pointless. Why do want to do this so badly?

        Loading editor
    • It may seem pointless to you but in the end it is an optional convenience for those who want it.

I don't want it per sey, I wanted to do an experiment with some features of HTML5 and this was born from that. I am merely offering it up for those who might get some use out of it.

    • I see no reason to turn this down; man did the work, it doesn't add any baggage to the site, I say let him add it. Hell, might get a few fans, and if it doesn't hurt us, may as well help us, yeah?

    • You can find the alpha version here.

Be aware that if you try to save anything with images it will probably fail.

Apparently, they love it. (JtK and Sonic.exe fanbase)

    • The production version which is ready for use and can be found here.

NOTE: If your exported PDF has display issues (garbled characters) please make sure the article you are exporting does not use any rich-text apostrophes. Make sure they are all the standard ASCII one ('). If you encounter non-ASCII apostrophes please replace them.
