I do not know this; however, I know these things: the first picture of the Slender Man was created on June 10, 2009,
the page called "The Slender Man"* was created on June 9, 2012,
the "Jeff the Killer" and "Slenderman"* on creepypasta.com were created on August 12, 2012 and January 14, 2010. But you probably knew that.

    • Creepypastas like Jeff the Killer can be traced back all the way to 2008, and the concept of creepypasta dates back to 2008 via google search trends, with March 2008 being the earliest anyone was searching for the term.

    • Steven has king published books of short stories since the seventies, and HP lovecreaft and E.A.P were making short stories loooong before that. I suppose you could trace creepypasta all the way back to the first short horror story ever written, and by that notion, the first one ever told to anyone.

        Loading editor
    • Honestly creepypasta's origins lie more in old urban legends, like The Licked Hand. Old creepypastas were very much in that vein.

        Loading editor
    • I agree, but I'm trying to trace creepypasta as far back as possible. Maybe there's a difference, I don't know, but I think that creepypasta has become synonomous with short horror story, and now it's just where it's posted.

If that's case, what's the most oldest urban legend out there? I think the plague one could be the most oldest, though I'm not sure.

    • RaptorKillerX-Venture, do you mean "The Plague Doctor?"

        Loading editor
    • I agree with LOLSKELETONS that creepypasta is just a modern day urban legend. As for the oldest urban legend there is, that would most likely go back to Roman times with stories about Hades, at least. Or it could go even farther back to Mesopotamia with their vampire lore. Finding the first urban legends is a fruitless process, because they date back longer than humans have been around. Although, to be fair, those people really believed in those things. But with the shocking number of people who believed that Squid's Suicide was real, I suppose that's not really that big of a deal.

No, it involved a mother and a daughter staying at a hotel room. The mom and the room later on disappears when the daughter returns back after buying medicine.

So vampire lores are possibly the oldest ones, okay.

    • What do you define as a creepypasta? Is it on this site? If so, the first thing posted was They're Everywhere by this wiki's founder on August 8, 2010, but it is not meant to scare you. Creepypastas have existed longer than this wiki has with /x/ being their original source. Creepypasta.com existed before the wiki and the earliest story posted there that wasn't a trollpasta was The Abandoned Convenience Store. It would take a long time to find the first posts on /x/ that have a semblance of what most consider a creepypasta if it is even possible.

EDIT: If you consider creepypastas to be scary stories on the internet, it would be impossible to find a scary story from the early days of the internet because most of the websites from the early days of the internet have been deleted.

Wait, your brother was in middle school in 2004 and he's currently 32 (making him around twenty when that came out)? I guess they were really serious about "no-child left behind". I'm pretty sure some people may have been inspired by Salad Fingers, but claiming it is the progenitor of all creepypastas doesn't make much sense considering the origin is much more likely urban legends like Polybius and internet tales that were copy/pasted and shared around and the series itself started in July 2004 and ended in 2013.

I might have came across some urban legend on Reddit. I remember reading some stories of a demonic Furby, a mom that lost all three of her kids due to some deadly coincidences, and some child that was telling of her experience with a protective shadow person. It was either Reddit or some obscure forum.

Yeah, but Ted the Caver was written before the notion of copypasta, let alone creepypasta.  To really understand the origins of creepypasta, you'd need to find out when the term copypasta came about because it definitively predates the notion of the genre.

        Loading editor
    • Apparently, the earliest known use of the word "creepypasta" was in July 6, 2007.

        Loading editor
    • But that doesn't mean that it technically was a creepypasta. What about all the other horror copypastas that came before them? are we not going to include those? And Ted the Caver was an urban legend, sure, but it began circulating the internet the same way any creepypasta does. Where do we draw the line?

    • wasn't slender man like an really old legon or something that people began to photoshop him into pictures and it became like a thing and it started the whole creepy pasta boom? Finding the actual creepy pasta that came before the others and called itself a creepypasta cant happen really. I think its more of a bunch of scary stories came online so fans of them dubbed them as creepypastas after a short time, meaning several stories that created creepypastas were most likley never called such a name.

        Loading editor
    • Res- I'm pretty sure Slenderman is actually pretty new. I remember it was made on a forum (who's name escapes me now) a few years ago.

        Loading editor
    • Idk, that just has the oldest origans that i know of, however the creepypasta is newer and the real start involed photoshop so it's not really that old.

But the point I poorly made is that, it depends on if we're looking at it as is if the story is a creepypasta by name or nature, as the name is pretty new as scary internet stories have been around before the actual term. However that doesn't mean the stories from the past are not creepypastas as they fall under what creepypastas are.

If you want to get technical, you could trace the very first creepypastas back to whenever people started sharing creepy stories on the internet (around the early '90s I'd imagine). I like to think of any creepy story before 2007-ish as "pre-creepypasta." Ted the Caver (like you mentioned) and The Dionaea House are good examples of this.

I don’t think ted the caver would really classify as a creepypasta since it wasn’t even close to when the term Creepypasta was made. Creepypasta was made in 2008 with the website Creepypasta.com, zalgo still is apart of the Creepypasta fandom ( or atleast that is what I believe ) I’m not 100% correct but I’m mostly sure Zalgo has to be the eldest
